ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — A man who died after crashing an SUV loaded with gas cans outside an upstate New York concert venue appeared to have been aiming at a pedestrian crossing, but investigators have found no evidence that the crash that killed two ride-hail passengers early on New Year’s Day was terror-related, police said Tuesday.Rochester police Chief David Smith told a news conference that the suspect in the crash, tentatively identified as Michael Avery of the Syracuse area, may have suffered from undiagnosed mental health problems. But officials say the motive remains unknown.“I have been getting inundated with questions as to why this individual would choose … Rochester, New York, why he would choose to do this on New Year’s Day, and why he would appear to target concert goers trying to have a great time to bring in the new year,” Mayor Malik Evans said. “Those are all questions that have been raised, and things that we just don’t have answers to yet.”The crash h...Hit-and-run driver arrested after colliding with FHP trooper on I-75 in Weston

LONDON — Two British minehunter ships destined for Ukraine cannot travel through Turkish waters, Ankara stressed Tuesday, citing an international pact.U.K. Defense Secretary Grant Shapps announced last month that Ukraine’s armed forces had struck a deal to procure the Sandown Class vessels from Britain’s Royal Navy as the war-torn country grapples with Russia’s continued blockade of the Black Sea.But Turkey confirmed it had informed its NATO allies that the ships would not be allowed to travel through its waters.“Our pertinent allies have been duly apprised that the mine-hunting ships donated to Ukraine by the United Kingdom will not be allowed to pass through the Turkish Straits to the Black Sea as long as the war continues,” a statement from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s communications directorate said. BERLIN — The rulers of Germany’s fractious three-party coalition government can breathe a small sigh of relief. In an internal party referendum, some 52 percent of members of the fiscally conservative Free Democratic Party (FDP) supported remaining in the ruling coalition, relieving some of the pressure on the FDP’s leadership to withdraw from the alliance amid widespread dissatisfaction with the government’s performance. The result of the vote, announced on Monday, should dampen speculation that FDP leaders will abandon the coalition to revive the party’s popularity among its voter base. Polls show the FDP at around 5 percent support, far below the 11.5 percent the party won at the last federal election in 2021, and leaving it in peril of being booted from the legislature in the next election. Parties need to win at least 5 percent to enter Germany’s parliament. The FDP, led by Finance Minister Christian Lindner, entered the coalition with two center-left parties — the Soc...Latest news
