BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) — Atlantic storm Lee made landfall at near-hurricane strength Saturday in Nova Scotia, Canada, after bringing destructive winds, rough surf and torrential rains to a large swath of New England and Maritime Canada that toppled trees, swamped coastlines and cut power to tens of thousands. One person was killed in Maine when a tree limb fell on his vehicle. With sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph), the center of the post-tropical cyclone came ashore about 135 miles (215 kilometers) west of Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. That’s about 50 miles (80 kilometers) southeast of Eastport, Maine. The storm was expected to weaken as it moved into New Brunswick and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In the United States, a tropical storm warning remained in effect from Cape Elizabeth, Maine, north to the U.S.-Canada border. That included Bar Harbor, the touristy gateway to Acadia National Park, where a whale watch vessel b...College football: South Dakota State rolls over Drake at Target Field

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — Eli Drinkwitz and the Missouri coaching staff decided in the closing seconds of a back-and-forth affair with Kansas State on Saturday that if the Tigers crossed midfield and reached the 40-yard line, they would give Harrison Mevis a chance to kick the winning field goal.Missouri made it to the Kansas State 38 and quarterback Brady Cook spiked the ball to stop the clock. Then that same coaching staff inexplicably lost track of time on the sideline, and the delay-of-game penalty pushed the field-goal attempt back 5 yards. What would have been a 56-yarder became a 61-yard long shot from the wrong side of midfield. It didn't matter. After Cook threw incomplete trying to recoup the yardage, Mevis trotted onto the field anyway. And with the final few seconds ticking away, he boomed the SEC-record 61-yarder over the crossbar, sending the Tigers to a field-storming, come-from-behind 30-27 victory over the No. 15 Wildcats in a showdown of former Big 12 rivals.“We took the p...From Lil Wayne and The Rock to ESPN and Fox Sports battling for space, one Boulder Saturday felt like Super Bowl Sunday: “I’ll take a free concert any day of the week.”

The youthful A’s lost their third straight game on Saturday afternoon and tied last season’s mark with their 102nd loss, falling 5-2 to the San Diego Padres. And while this year’s team still seems likely to end up with the most losses in the franchise’s Oakland history (the current record is 108 losses in 1979), the youth movement continues to build some small hope that things could be different in 2024.Rookie sensation Zack Gelof hit his 12th homer of the season on Saturday, launching a solo shot in the sixth off of Padres starter Matt Waldron, who earned his first career win — and a noteworthy one within the sport, too.Waldron, 26, primarily pitches a knuckleball and earned the win by only allowing two runs over 5 1/3 innings. He became the first pitcher to use a knuckleball while earning a win in nearly five years (the last knuckleballer to get a win was Steven Wright on Sept. 20, 2018).Waldron’s knuckler wasn’t untouchable, as the A’s batters picked up seven hits off of him.
