AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Our first widespread freeze of the season is expected in portions of Central Texas tonight -- and across more of the area tomorrow night -- several weeks ahead of when we typically see it.Cool northerly breezes are still blowing Halloween evening, keeping temperatures much colder than normal for Oct. 31. Trick-or-treat plans should include a jacket, with temperatures falling through the 50s through 9 p.m., and the 40s thereafter.A Freeze Warning is in effect for Williamson and Milam counties, in addition to the entire Hill Country, for the first widespread freeze of the season in those areas Wednesday morning. Greg Abbott announced Tuesday a statewide hiring initiative for Texas veterans, service members and veteran spouses running through November.The 2023 Hiring Red, White, & You! hiring fair will operate from Nov. 1-17, per a news release. BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) -- Starlink announced on social media Monday it would host a hiring event on Nov. 4 to find new hires for its production facility in Bastrop. The satellite-based internet service provider, engineered by Elon Musk's SpaceX, is looking to "keep up with surging demand for connectivity around the world," per the social media post. Those interested in becoming a production associate are asked to sign up by 8 p.m. CT on Friday in order to attend the event.Job openings in Bastrop include wastewater treatment specialists, warehouse supervisors, warehouse specialists along with senior product and compliance engineers. ST. LOUIS - A St. Louis man who helped at least 20 people file fraudulent pandemic loan applications that reaped $666,656 will spend several years behind bars. A federal judge sentenced Jacob Eldridge, 45, to four years and nine months in prison on Tuesday in connection with the crimes, ranging from Jan. 1, 2021 to Jan. 13, 2022. Prosecutors wonder about other victims after deathbed scam Investigators say Eldridge solicited at least 20 friends and acquaintances to file fraudulent applications for PPP loans. These loans were intended to help struggling business owners and their employees during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to his indictment, Eldridge often drafted and submitted fraudulent applications on behalf of those people. On at least 10 applications, Eldridge reported false or substantially inflated gross annual income figures to max out the loans. He also submitted bogus IRS forms on behalf of the businesses. A man died overnight Sunday after a tractor-trailer truck hit the car he was trying to reattach to a tow strap in the center lane of Interstate 70 in Wheat Ridge.The crash happened about 9:30 p.m. Sunday in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 70 near Carr Street, the Wheat Ridge Police Department reported Tuesday on X.Wheat Ridge Police officers responded to a crash on I-70 eastbound near Carr St. just before 9:30 p.m. Sunday night.
