MLB Insider: Cardinals should 'consider bold action' before trade deadline ST. LOUIS - Nearing the halfway point of the season, the St. Louis Cardinals are in a pivotal spot where the team will soon need to decide if they're contenders or pretenders for the 2023 season. After hosting two games in London, the Cardinals return home to Busch Stadium behind a 32-45 record. They're 8.5 games back of the closest path to postseason (the NL Central title) and some models are giving them only a 3% chance to make the big dance this year. RELATED - Wainwright deactivates Twitter account after start in London It's an unfamiliar spot for a Cardinals team with just one losing season in the 21st century. President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak told media members as recently as last week. "I would hope the Cardinals are not allowed to rebuild" amid the prolonged struggles. He added, "We still don't know exactly which path we'll walk" ahead of the trade deadline. A column published Tuesday on The Athletic by MLB Insider Ken Rosenthal doesn't visibly suggest the ...

Nuggets GM Calvin Booth on free agency: “Hopefully we get the whole crew back.” The Nuggets’ starters aren’t going anywhere.Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Michael Porter Jr., Aaron Gordon and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope are all under contract for at least one more season. It’s Denver’s bench that could see some turnover following its historic championship run. Beginning with Bruce Brown, who already (and expectedly) declined his player option, the Nuggets have numerous unrestricted free agents heading into the summer. Brown, Jeff Green, DeAndre Jordan, Ish Smith, Reggie Jackson and Thomas Bryant are all on the verge of free agency, which begins at 4 p.m. MT Friday. If Nuggets GM Calvin Booth gets his way, this season’s roster will look a lot like last year’s.“Hopefully we get the whole crew back,” he told The Denver Post. The biggest question is Brown, who proved to be a free-agent steal last season. After he played out of position in Brooklyn, the Nuggets utilized him how he wanted to be played, and it paid off. The Nuggets can offer Brown up to $7.8 million for next s...

Casa Bonita eliminates tipping, going against service industry norm

Casa Bonita eliminates tipping, going against service industry norm Guests who dine at the Casa Bonita will not be asked to tip on their meals and drinks, challenging the conventional service industry model in Denver and beyond. The Lakewood landmark made its highly anticipated reopening to the public on June 23, offering locals the chance to buy tickets that include a meal. Tickets cost $39.99 for adults and $24.99 for kids ages 3 to 12. Kids under 3 are free.Higher-ups made the decision to eliminate tips — and raise the service staff’s base pay — after a soft opening period during which “we found guests simply weren’t tipping,” according to an emailed statement from Casa Bonita management.“We believe that’s due to our unconventional, pre-pay ticketing system,” the statement said.Staff were notified just days before the reopening. According to contracts reviewed by The Denver Post, Casa Bonita originally was planning to pay bartenders $14.27 an hour plus tips. That was amended to a flat fee of $30 an hour without tips, according to...

U.S. Supreme Court rejects Colorado’s standard for criminal threats

U.S. Supreme Court rejects Colorado’s standard for criminal threats The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday strengthened First Amendment protections for threatening statements and found that Colorado prosecutors and judges violated a man’s Constitutional rights in a recent stalking case. The court’s ruling in Counterman v. Colorado will make it more difficult for prosecutors to prove criminal charges against people who make threats, Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser said in a statement Tuesday. The justices ruled that prosecutors in a criminal threats case must prove not only that a person made threatening statements, but also that the person intended the statements to be threatening. Colorado’s legal framework previously required prosecutors to prove only the impact the statements would have on a reasonable person, not the speaker’s intent. In the 7-2 decision, the justices rejected that objective standard in favor of a subjective standard that considers the speaker’s intent. They cited concerns that the objective standard ...
