The final games of college football’s regular season (I know Army-Navy is technically a regular season matchup, but it serves as an appendix) are fittingly played during the Thanksgiving weekend. As we load up our plates this Thursday (next to leaving the kiddie table; the rite of passage on this holiday was being able to dish up your own dinner), we get to choose from the traditional (turkey is the old-school rivalry that is good when it’s juicy but dry when both teams are sub-. 500 like Indiana-Purdue), the delicious (Ohio State-Michigan is the sweet potato casserole that delivers even when the dish doesn’t have an inch of brown sugar or the matchup features two unbeaten teams), the mandatory (Georgia-Georgia Tech and Clemson-South Carolina are the rarely-tasty greens that must make their way to the plate for you to merit dessert), and the manufactured (Penn State-Michigan State has never felt like a final game of the season, just like green bean casserole feels f...Israel and Hamas reached a deal on a cease-fire and hostages. What does it look like?

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — A temporary cease-fire agreement to facilitate the release of dozens of people taken hostage during Hamas’ raid on Israel is expected to bring the first respite to war-weary Palestinians in Gaza and a glimmer of hope to the families of the captives. After hitting a last-minute snag, the deal was expected to take effect on Friday, a day later than originally planned. Under its terms, Israel and Hamas agreed to a four-day halt in hostilities. Palestinian prisoners held by Israel would also be freed as part of the agreement. The deal was brokered by Qatar, the U.S. and Egypt and announced on Wednesday. It capped weeks of fitful indirect negotiations and set the stage for a tense period that could determine the course of the war, which was set off by Hamas’ Oct. 7 raid.Israel, Hamas and Qatar have released different details of the agreement, but those details do not appear to contradict one another.WHAT’S IN THE DEAL?Qatar announced that 50 hostages will be r...WHO asks China for more information about rise in illnesses and pneumonia clusters

GENEVA (AP) — The World Health Organization says it has made an official request to China for information about a potentially worrying spike in respiratory illnesses and clusters of pneumonia in children. The U.N. health agency cited unspecified media reports and a global infectious disease monitoring service as reporting clusters of undiagnosed pneumonia in children in northern China. In a statement late Wednesday, WHO said it was unclear whether those were linked to a rise in respiratory infections reported by Chinese authorities.Outside scientists said the situation warranted close monitoring, but were not convinced that the recent spike in respiratory illnesses in China signaled the start of a new global outbreak. The emergence of new diseases, particularly new flu strains or other viruses capable of triggering pandemics, typically starts with undiagnosed clusters of respiratory illness. Both SARS and COVID-19 were first reported as unusual types of pneumonia. WHO noted that auth...NFL aims to provide valuable resources to former players through its Legends Community

John Randle was skeptical going into a meeting with NFL officials about an initiative for former players.Ten years later, Randle plays a major role in the program. The Hall of Fame defensive linemen is one of five directors for the NFL Legends Community, an organization launched in 2013 that provides valuable resources for more than 20,000 former players.“I didn’t think this was going to succeed because there were multiple programs people wanted to do for former players,” Randle said. But this was different. It was a vision of Troy Vincent, a five-time Pro Bowl cornerback who leads the NFL’s football operations department, and league executive Tracy Pearlman. They wanted to celebrate former players, to help them stay connected with their teams and to provide them with assistance in many areas from understanding which benefits are available to them to handling life after football. Calling them “legends” instead of former players was part of honoring their contributions to the game.“It ...Fighting in disputed Kashmir kills 5 Indian soldiers and 2 suspected militants

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Barcelona and Real Madrid will be without three of their top young players when the Spanish league returns this weekend, after they were injured during the international break.Barcelona lost 19-year-old Gavi for the rest of the season when the all-terrain midfielder tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and damaged his lateral meniscus during Spain’s final European Championship qualifier. Spain was already qualified for next year’s tournament in Germany before it beat Georgia 3-1 on Sunday.National team coach Luis de la Fuente has come under criticism in Spain’s sports media for not substituting Gavi when his knee buckled inward during a collision with an opponent. He played on for a few minutes only to collapse in tears before limping off. He will now undergo surgery that will most likely also rule him out for Spain at Euro 2024.Gavi, despite his age, has emerged as a key player for Spain and for his club. Place Fernand Cocq 14What’s good? Panam kebab’s motto is “fast food good” — quick meals that leave you feeling healthy, rather than bloated. You pick between a döner bread or a platter — filled with your choice of falafel, chicken or halloumi. Most of their food is homemade, such as their marinated cucumber, white and red cabbage, and pickled onions. The hand-cut fries are thin and crispy, making them extra crunchy after being double-fried, and they come with a handful of sauces to pick from. You can also kick your caffeine levels up with the popular Club-Mate drink inspired by Argentina’s famous national tea. What’s not? The platter was delicious, but it was perhaps a little light on halloumi and grilled veggies.Vibe: The restaurant’s logo is a man with a mullet and sunglasses cutting a döner — and the posters inside the restaurant mirror the funky vibe. The interior design is modern and hip: You order from the open kitche...Former Boy Scout leader pleads guilty to sexually assaulting New Hampshire boy decades ago

BRENTWOOD, N.H. (AP) — A former Boy Scout leader and camp counselor in New Hampshire has been sentenced to a year in jail for sexually assaulting a boy in his troop decades ago.Michael Brady, 44, pleaded guilty Nov. 14 to engaging in a pattern of aggravated felonious sexual assault and to endangering the welfare of a child, the Rockingham County attorney’s office said Wednesday. As part of a plea agreement, he was sentenced to 12 months in jail, plus a six- to 15-year prison sentence that will remain suspended if he pays restitution to the victim and meets other conditions.Prosecutors said the assaults took place in the late 1990s and early 2000s in Kingston while Brady was the victim’s Boy Scout master and camp counselor. County Attorney Patricia Conway praised the “bravery and integrity” of the now-adult victim, saying he “stood strong and determined to do the right thing in the face of adversity.”Conway said the sentence reflects that the case presented challenges giv...Latest news
