By BIANCA VÁZQUEZ TONESS, ED WHITE and ADRIAN SAINZ (Associated Press)DETROIT (AP) — Americans across the country this weekend celebrated Juneteenth, marking the relatively new national holiday with cookouts, parades and other gatherings as they commemorated the end of slavery after the Civil War.While many have treated the long holiday weekend as a reason for a party, others urged quiet reflection on America’s often violent and oppressive treatment of its Black citizens. And still others have remarked at the strangeness of celebrating a federal holiday marking the end of slavery in the nation while many Americans are trying to stop parts of that history from being taught in public schools.“Is #Juneteenth the only federal holiday that some states have banned the teaching of its history and significance?” Author Michelle Duster asked on Twitter this weekend, referring to measures in Florida, Oklahoma and Alabama prohibiting an Advancement Placement African American studies course or ...Lake George man accused of sex crimes at Walgreens

The case against Donald Trump grows stronger by the day. Yet despite his indictment on dozens of national security felonies, a little-noticed event here in Colorado could speed his return to the White House. It’s all due to an out-of-state group that recently secured a spot on the ballot in Colorado. The group, which claims to promote bipartisanship, can now run a third-party presidential ticket in 2024. While that may sound appealing, in reality, it risks dividing the mainstream majority of Colorado voters and tilting the election to Trump. The group in question is called No Labels. They are a DC-based political organization that began as a group of Republicans and Democrats working to tackle our nation’s biggest challenges. As a former Senator who always tried to find common ground with the other party, I know that’s a worthy goal. No matter how you’ve voted in the past, it’s obvious to everyone that we need more – not less – cooperation between our elected leaders. But running a thi...Letters: Denver Nuggets’ faithful fans are worthy of access to games on TV

Nuggets, Avs fans are worthy of TV accessIt is truly great to see the Nuggets grow up and become the champs. The Kroenkes now have winners in both of their Denver teams. The Avalanche and the Nuggets are two of the best of the best. And the fans know it.After Monday’s Nuggets’ win, I watched Stan Kroenke during the interview on the arena floor with the TV announcer and at the winner’s table. There he spoke clearly and loudly about the great fans of Denver, the state of Colorado and across the nation who have given their unwavering support to his teams. Is his praise a hollow thank you? Has he really given any thought to all of his fans that are shut out of local TV coverage and yet are the most loyal fans in the country? That part of his character remains to be seen.Neil Iskow, ParkerSo now that the Nuggets have won the NBA Championship and Stan Kroenke has openly stated how wonderful all the fans are, perhaps it’s time for him to put his money where his mouth is a...Two minors killed after struck by car in San Diego County

On the Neko Case: We know Neko Case as a member of Canadian indie rock band the New Pornographers (although Case herself is American), but her solo work is and has always been spectacular. Poetic and haunting, rooted in the traditional but with a very contemporary bent, she’s a true artist and 2018’s Hell-On album is a gem. See for yourself at the Fonda. I have felt ‘outside’ of it for a long time though, which is wrong to me as I’m ‘in it’ more than a lot of people. I live in Vermont, a part known as “The Northeast Kingdom.” It’s a leftover name from some tourist campaign, but it sounds majestic, which this place really is! In my own personal world, I refer to the forest I live in as ‘The Lung.’ That name came quietly out of my feelings for the place, and it has no scientific basis whatsoever. It is affectionate shorthand. The Lung makes air, it cleans, it...Star-studded ‘Into the Woods’ comes to S.F.’s Curran Theatre

There’s never a bad time to go “Into the Woods.”With catchy and intricate songs by Stephen Sondheim and a witty book by James Lapine, the 1987 musical is a magically funny, melancholy and touching mashup of beloved fairy tales, exploring what happens after “happily ever after.”But the production visiting San Francisco’s Curran Theater for a six-day run is something truly special, featuring the most of the actual cast of last year’s acclaimed Broadway revival, including at least nine members of the opening night cast such as Gavin Creel as Cinderella’s Prince and the Big Bad Wolf, Cole Thompson as Jack and David Patrick Kelly as the Narrator.“We have 95 percent of our Broadway company on the road,” marvels Montego Glover, who plays the Witch. “It is extraordinarily rare. It truly, honestly, never happens. We did a little research, and I think maybe the last time was in the ’30s, that a Broadway company pulled up stakes and moved with the show.
