Trump files to have DC judge recuse from election subversion case

By Eric Tucker and Alanna Durkin Richer | Associated PressWASHINGTON — Lawyers for Donald Trump on Monday asked the federal judge presiding over his election subversion case in Washington to recuse herself, saying her past public statements about the former president and his connection to the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol call into question whether she can be fair. The recusal motion from Trump’s lawyers takes aim at U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan, a former assistant public defender who was nominated to the bench by President Barack Obama and has stood out as one of the toughest punishers of Jan. 6 defendants. The request is a long shot given the high threshold for recusal and because the decision on whether to recuse belongs to Chutkan, who is unlikely to see cause to step aside from the case.Even so, the request that she give up the high-stakes trial marks the latest flashpoint in already delicate relations between the defense team and the judge, who has repeatedl...Vehicle driver still sought in hit-and-run death of Hayward bicyclist

Associated PressTASELI PLATEAU, Turkey — Rescuers pulled an American researcher out of a Turkish cave on Monday, more than a week after he became seriously ill 1,000 meters (more than 3,000 feet) below its entrance, said the Speleological Federation of Turkey.Teams from across Europe had rushed to Morca cave in southern Turkey’s Taurus Mountains to aid Mark Dickey, a 40-year-old experienced caver who became seriously ill on Sept. 2 with stomach bleeding. He was on an expedition to map the cave, which is the country’s third deepest.Dickey was too frail to climb out himself, so rescuers carried him with the help of a stretcher, making frequent stops at temporary camps set up along the way.“Mark Dickey is out of the Morca cave. He is fine and is being tended to by emergency medical worker in the encampment above,” said a statement by the speleological federation on Monday. “Thus, the cave rescue part of the operation has ended successfully. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- A water main break in the area of Fillmore and Green streets in San Francisco's Cow Hollow neighborhood has led to the formation of a sinkhole in an intersection, according to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. Earlier, PG&E was on the scene attempting to isolate a gas main inside the work area. Once that work is complete, crews were expected to resume work on the water mains, SFPUC said. The intersection at Union and Green caved in and a sinkhole appeared at around 11 a.m. Monday. The sinkhole is disrupting bus service, according to SF Muni. The Browns’ defense appears transformed under new coordinator Jim Schwartz

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns’ most significant acquisition this offseason wasn’t on the field for a single snap in Sunday’s season-opening win over Cincinnati.Jim Schwartz received a game ball.Cleveland’s new defensive coordinator designed a plan that overwhelmed quarterback Joe Burrow and the Bengals, who managed just 142 total yards and six first downs in a rain-soaked 24-3 loss to the Browns. With All-Pro end Myles Garrett leading the charge — while also showing off some basketball moves — the Browns pressured Burrow from the start, hurrying the newly minted $275 million QB into making bad throws on a day when just gripping the ball was a challenge.Burrow managed 82 yards passing — by far the worst performance of his NFL career — against a rebuilt Cleveland defense that showed off its depth, versatility, swagger and an aggressiveness that has defined Schwartz’s career. The fiery 57-year-old former Detroit head coach, who won a Super Bowl as Philadelphia...Vikings must quickly regroup after the unpleasant surprise of losing a close opener

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — For all the mistakes the Minnesota Vikings made to waste a significant amount of their good work in the season opener, the feeling was strong on their sideline — and throughout the stadium, for that matter — that they would ultimately extract a victory from a tight game. The Vikings turned that into an art form last year, after all, setting an NFL record with 11 wins in 11 decisions by eight points or fewer. This time, those vital fourth-quarter plays just weren’t made.“There’s an unwavering belief in this locker room. Even when there’s five minutes left and we were down by a field goal, we thought we had that one for sure,” tight end T.J. Hockenson said. The offense went three-and-out on its last two possessions. The defense allowed a fourth-down conversion to extend Tampa Bay’s drive for the tiebreaking field goal and later let the Buccaneers drain the final 3:52 off the clock Sunday with a 15-yard facemask penalty and two third-down conversions for a ...2 homicides on South Platte River Trail may be linked
