By Jake Coyle | Associated PressThe original 1971 “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory” may have been a delicious dream, lined with trees of gumballs and fields of lollipops. But never has there been a more cautionary tale about the danger of too much of a good thing.Magical as that Roald Dahl-scripted film was, it remains lodged in our imaginations less for its sugary goodness than the way darkness, satire and even mania ebb around its edges — flowing down that nightmarish watery tunnel and pooling somewhere in the back of Gene Wilder’s eyes. Charlie Bucket and Grandpa Joe may bubble with laughter all the way up the ceiling, but there’s a spinning metal blade up there.“Wonka,” the latest attempt to revisit Dahl’s masterwork, bears no such danger. It’s going more for the taste of an Everlasting Gobstopper — an ingenious confection that piles flavor on top of flavor. Tasty though that can be, you miss the daring of Dahl in the more wa...Word Game: Dec. 15, 2023

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Two-time All-Star Ja Morant told reporters after the Los Angeles Lakers ousted Memphis in six games to start the playoffs in April that he had to make better decisions, knowing off-the-court issues affected the Grizzlies’ season. Now the dazzling point guard given a 25-game timeout by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is about to get a second chance to prove he really means that. Morant will talk with the media Friday after Memphis’ morning shootaround before the Grizzlies host Houston that night. It will be the first time that Morant has talked with reporters since that disappointing first-round ouster April 29. And the Grizzlies really need a boost. Morant’s suspension is one of several factors that have left the Grizzlies near the bottom of the NBA after earning the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference each of the past two seasons. The No. 2 pick overall in the 2020 draft, 2021 NBA Rookie of the Year and 2022 Most Improved Player didn’t sh...Judge says a tabloid publisher hacked Prince Harry’s phone and awards him 140,000 pounds in damages

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — A 13-year old boy from Canton, Ohio, has been charged with allegedly planning a mass shooting of a local Jewish synagogue. The teenager, who is unnamed in court documents because he is a minor, is charged with inducing panic and disorderly conduct, both misdemeanors. He’s accused of posting a “detailed plan to complete a mass shooting” at Temple Israel in Canton, a city south of Akron, on the live streaming platform Discord. The charges come amid a rise of antisemitism in the United States and worldwide. In the U.S. alone, antisemitic incidents rose 35% from 2021 to 2022.According to documents released by the Stark County Sherriff’s Office Thursday, an FBI agent alerted the department to the Discord posts on Sept. 7. The plans were initially posted on Sept. 1, and contained maps of the synagogue allegedly drawn by the boy and another individual in Washington state. They also included plans to burn down and “shoot up” the building. When confronted by law ...Latest news
