Against 3NT, West led a low spade. Dummy’s jack won, but declarer looked in vain for a way to use the long diamonds. He let the queen of clubs ride at Trick Two, then led a heart to his queen. He cashed his high diamonds, the ace of hearts and ace of clubs, shrugged and led a third heart. The defenders took the rest for down one.BETTER CHANCE?“Two finesses worked, and I still couldn’t make it,” South gumbled. “We would’ve had a better chance at five diamonds.”“We had a chance at 3NT,” North said contentiously, “but not with you as declarer.”South can finesse in hearts at the second trick, cash the ace, unblock his high diamonds and exit with the king of spades. I have some friends but — because of a stressful job I’ve had for the last 20 years, working 14- to 17-hour days — making new ones can be a struggles.Recently, I tried to reach out to two women I’ve known for a while. Sadly, they both kept their distance. One actually didn’t respond until after the lunch date I had proposed; she apologized for “missing my text.” I was stung by the brush-off but tried to give her the benefit of the doubt and waited to see if she might reciprocate the invitation.
