Uzbekistan votes on changes that extend president’s tenure TASHKENT, Uzbekistan (AP) — Voters in Uzebekistan, the most populous former Soviet Central Asian republic, cast ballots Sunday in a referendum on a revised constitution that promises human rights reforms but that also would allow the country’s president to stay in office until 2040.Approval appears certain. Backers have conducted an array of promotional events featuring local celebrities, and elections in Uzbekistan are widely regarded as noncompetitive. The proposed changes include lengthening the presidential term from five to seven years, while retaining the existing two-term limit. But although President Shavkat Mirziyoyev is in his second term, the change in term length would allow him to run twice more after his current tenure ends in 2026. Other changes include abolishing capital punishment and boosting legal protections for citizens, including those accused of crimes.Under Mirziyoyev’s predecessor, Islam Karimov, Uzbekistan was one of the region’s most repr...

School lunches in conceptual NYS budget ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -Included in Governor Hochul's conceptual budget is $134 million towards school lunches. When it comes to school lunches, different groups and legislators are hoping to increase the aid currently proposed. According to school lunch director and member of New York State School Nutrition Public Policy Committee, Patrick Kenneally, Hochul's plan to solve hunger in schools is not where it should be. Kiszla: Gritty, little underdog Nuggets remind Phoenix who’s real team to beat in the West Maybe it’s time the NBA power-brokers and pundits woke up, got off their lazy rumps, grabbed an old-fashioned road atlas and took a little trip to discover a team from our dusty old cowtown in the lost time zone.Don’t know about you. But for championship frauds, the gritty, little Nuggets look for real to me.The Nuggets burned hotter than the Suns in a dominant 125-107 victory that opened this best-of-seven playoff series with a revelation.“Nobody’s picking us to win,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said Saturday. “All the pressure’s on them.”When the playoffs began, Las Vegas oddsmakers made Phoenix the favorite to come out of the Western Conference. Although it doesn’t happen often, it appears that perhaps those wise guys in Vegas were wrong.Let anybody and everybody suggest Denver is a fraud as a No. 1 seed. Milwaukee and Memphis are already gone from the championship hunt. The Nuggets know they’re legit contenders.“...

Rockies’ Noah Davis rocked by D-backs as Colorado loses seventh straight at Coors Field Noah Davis dodged his inevitable baptism by fire, until Saturday night. The Rockies’ rookie right-hander, so good in his first two big-league starts, was roasted by the Diamondbacks, who ripped Colorado, 11-4, in front of 34,399 fans at Coors Field.“The first couple of starts went well and I felt like I was competing,” Davis said. “All you can really ask for is to go out there and compete and see what the results are. But you have to take your lumps when they come. It’s going to be a learning process.”Davis, 25, entered the game with an 0.93 ERA, the lowest in Rockies history for a pitcher’s first two career starts. Davis was also the only Rockies pitcher to not allow an extra-base hit through his first two starts. But it took Arizona just two innings to teach Davis some big-league lessons. He departed having given up seven runs on seven hits with an ERA of 6.17.“He threw strikes for the most part, although there were some walks in ther...

Jamal Murray, Nuggets strike first with commanding Game 1 rout over Suns Jamal Murray was helpless the last time Denver met Phoenix in the postseason. Forgive him for soaking in the moment. As Murray rained in 3-pointers and converted on preposterous finishes at the rim, the Nuggets’ emotional heartbeat beckoned to the home fans to get louder. Even if he got a taste of that feeling again in the first round of the playoffs, Murray wasn’t about to let the moment pass.Led by Murray, the Nuggets pummeled the Suns, 125-107, in Saturday night’s Game 1 Western Conference semifinal at Ball Arena, sending the first missive in this tantalizing matchup. Murray finished with 34 points and six 3-pointers, quieting those who suggested Phoenix’s superstars might overshadow Denver’s.According to Nuggets coach Michael Malone, Murray “just continues to add to the legend of playoff Jamal Murray.”Nikola Jokic assembled a 24-point, 19-rebound performance that had to leave the Suns wondering how they’d contend with his size heading into Monday’s Game 2.
