Jordan Howden and Terell Smith persisted with Gophers, now poised for NFL Draft

Published Mon, 17 Feb 2025 21:26:08 GMT

Gophers safety Jordan Howden had a baptism by fire during his true freshman season in fall 2018 — and then he nearly froze that winter.Howden was thrust into a starting role with the season-ending foot injury to Antoine Winfield Jr., and the walk-on struggled with the adjustment to Big Ten football. After the season, the San Diego native recalled numbing minus-40 degree conditions on his trek to and from a night class.“It was something you don’t forget,” Howden said with a smile as his senior season wrapped up in November.Howden didn’t let those bites gnaw at him. He made huge strides on the field through last season to become a leader on the U’s stout defense and coped with the relentless snow and cold to be a consistent academic all-Big Ten honoree.“I was just on a mission,” Howden said. “Someone willing to do whatever it took, and that is why I look back and I was like, ‘Dang, how far I came.’ Something a lot of people can’t do.”Cornerback Terell Smith also did it. Published Mon, 17 Feb 2025 21:26:08 GMT

A Mexican ice cream shop on the west side of St. Paul is getting a major overhaul this week with a new name, additional owners, and plans for the future.Formerly La Michoacana Pink Ice Cream, the store on Cesar Chavez and Ada streets is being rebranded to Le Fresuchii Neveria. Andrea Cruz and her husband, John Babcock, recently joined the shop’s ownership group and are working to help the business set itself apart. The shop’s existing menu, which consists primarily of paletas — Mexican fruit-based popsicles — will stay familiar, Cruz said. The previous owner is still in charge of developing flavors and making the paletas, though now he might have more time to experiment. As for Cruz and Babcock, their major innovation is developing new molds to freeze paletas in unique shapes. The rebrand is the first priority, though, so we’ll have to wait a bit for creative popsicle designs and different flavors. The new name is a play on la fresa, Spanish for strawberry, and Cruz is hoping it’...
